Domain Shane’s Daily List of Domains at Auction for Monday May 15th

A great comment the other day at one of the Silk Road domain blogs said “the sherpas on DomainSherpa.com would say aperfectlanding.com sucks Drop that name fast stop throwing your money away start over. BUT Mike Mann would sell aperfectlanding.com for $100,000”    First of all you are missing all the information about Mike Mann and his domains. You hear what he wants you to hear and what his lackeys put out there.  He HAS to get those prices to think about breaking even.  Don’t get me wrong.  I think he will end up doing very very well. He has been doing it a while and has a lot of great names.  Despite those names there have been financial problems.   I’ve never heard of financial problems from Berkens, Schilling, Schwartz, Reyberry brothers.  I know, I know, personal reasons.   All I am saying is he isn’t killing it despite being in this a long time and making lots of money.

Back to the quote.  Would I tell you to drop it?  No.  I would throw it into the numbers game portfolio just like Mann does.  I have a section of my portfolio like that too.  But I didn’t have SEO and HappyBirthday.com from back in the day to cashflow my waiting names like him.  I do now so I have started building a brandable, BIN portfolio.  Want to follow his lead?  Do it. I challenge you.  To the point I’m pretty sure you can’t buy 300 names and publicly track purchases and sales and show a profit for 2 years in a row.  Ali can.  Josh can.  A few others can.  Most can’t.   They just talk and comment in the blogs and talk about the sales.  Leaving the important details in the closet.

Here are today’s names. Click for most recent price

YZ.net   Two letter dot nets have been pretty rare.  Will be interesting to see what this closes at

Inheritance.com   Tax or estate planning dream name

HostingProgram.com     I see more hosting families and kids from other countries than I do web hosting.  No bidders

BankingInstitute.com    12 bidders on this financial name.

CENO.com  Getting all the action because its a CVCV.   103 bidders and five figures

Domain Shane’s Daily List of Domains at Auction for Thursday May 11th

Some great names today.  It’s Mother’s Day weekend which in the garden center world means Christmas.  I’ll still put the 2 or more hours in the list but we’re going to have to sacrifice the opening.  But to make up I’ll leave you with a joke

A guy calls a company and orders their 5-day, 5lbs weight loss program.

The next day, there’s a knock on the door and there stands before him a voluptuous, athletic, 19 year old babe dressed in nothing but a pair of Nike running shoes and a sign around her neck..

She introduces herself as a representative of the weight loss company. The sign reads, “If you can catch me, you can have me.”

Without a second thought, he takes off after her. A few miles later puffing and puffing, he finally gives up. The same girl shows up for the next four days and the same thing happens. On the fifth day, he weighs himself and is delighted to find he has lost 5lbs as promised.

He calls the company and orders their 5-day/10lbs program. The next day there’s a knock at the door and there stands the most stunning, beautiful, sexy woman he has ever seen in his life. She is wearing nothing but Reebok running shoes and a sign around her neck that reads, “If you catch me you can have me”.

Well, he’s out the door after her like a shot. This girl is in excellent shape and he does his best, but no such luck. So for the next four days, the same routine happens with him gradually getting in better and better shape.

Much to his delight on the fifth day when he weighs himself, he discovers that he has lost another 10lbs as promised. He decides to go for broke and calls the company to order the 7-day/25 lbs program.

“Are you sure?” asks the representative on the phone. “This is our most rigorous program.” “Absolutely,” he replies, “I haven’t felt this good in years.”

The next day there’s a knock at the door; and when he opens it he finds a huge muscular guy standing there wearing nothing but pink running shoes and a sign around his neck that reads, “If I catch you, you are mine.”

Here are today’s names.   Click for Current Price.

Quote Of The Day  My mission in life is not merely to survive, but to thrive; and to do so with some passion, some compassion, some humor, and some style – Maya Angelou

Domain Of The Day: Higu.com   Very nice CVCV.com that ends tonight.  Just crossed $1K

Godaddy Domains That I Like With Multiple Bids

Sideband.com    Could brand this like SideGig which is a super hot term thanks to Uber

AgriDry.com   These are the names that sell for me.   Buy for $70 sell for $1500.  I just never know which one is going to sell.

SpotClean.com   This one as well.  So many uses.  Won’t say easy money but easier money than most on the board today

AgriHire.com  Another nice Agriculture name

BrazilBotanicals.com    Women in Brazil are traditionally beautiful so it works as a fashion brand IMO

Bynari.com  Have to be careful here.  Existing company name and it exists on the dot net.  Upgrade but its a targeting upgrade which is not a good thing.  But I like the name.  Play on Binary

Camtrol.com      Controlling a camera is where I see this heading.   But I guess that’s pretty obvious

FlowRiders.com   I only know the “rapper”

726.biz    3 number dot biz are worth owning.  My opinion only

VoteApp.com   Highest price on the GD board today

RunnerRunner.com     People used to make fun of me because I though repeating keywords would have value.  I believed them so I dropped them all

EarthBuilders.com   Most people just destroy it

SeedDoctor.com   The people against GMO would hate this name. Which means its awesome

DevilStrain.com   Sounds like a good canna strain

AirWaze.com     Worth adding to the portfolio IMO

DrainSeal.com  Not as good as SweatSeal but close 4th

Wokay.com   and   Wazeo.com    Two 5Ls I like on the board today

Jibot.com    I like this one even more because of “Bot”

Domain Shane’s Daily List of Domains at Auction for Sunday May 7th

If you own a business that sells products or service you know that pricing is a huge determinate of sales and profits.  Finding the perfect price is the goal but its much easier said than done.   One, because most companies don’t know their true cost.  They may know their input costs but they don’t usually have a good grasp of costs once they factor in all costs from employee benefits to marketing and every touch and expense in the middle.  Sure it can be figured out if everything is documented but some expenses aren’t occurred until the process in underway.  Meaning that after the first year you realize your price is off.   And even if you know complete costs, most company have trouble with value.  Is it worth more or less than the margins you are hoping to achieve?  How much are your buyers willing to pay.  Companies will use focus groups and other data to try and figure this out as well.

It’s something I work on every day.   I never operate on margin.  I certainly have a margin I am trying to achieve as a final result.  But I know value of what I can get for each product and my goal is to get the product cheaper.  And we’re pretty cheap because we can grow it.   I’m competing against other stores that have to buy it in. So I can usually be cheaper and be much more profitable on the plants side.  The other products I struggle to compete.  Lowes is buying shovels by the truckload.  Miracle Gro cost them 1/3 of what I pay.  I can’t compete anymore.  I purposely sell only the higher end of those markets so I can at least have sales to people that are looking for the higher end products. I have zero chance on commodity type items.

Domains are completely different.  They are the exact opposite of commodity products.  There are some similarities. Figuring out pricing on your domains will yield you more profits.  But its not nearly as easy as commodity products.  It comes down to one person wanting it.  Instead of trying to price for thousands or millions of buyers.  You can find price points that work for certain types of domains but often you’re just not sure why one sold and others don’t.  Josh has done a good job figuring it out. Mike Mann claims he has (but what doesn’t he claim). Like any business, getting it right will make you rich.  Or at least richer. With domains the only way you know you got it right is by a sale.  Even then you’re never quite sure if it was high enough.  Here are today’s names.    Click for Current Price.

Quote Of The Day  ”

IKE’S LIST OF DOMAINS AT AUCTION FOR Tuesday, May 6th

Escrow.com

I received a contact form submission from a new domainer named  Chris, he had some questions about BIN listings so I thought I’d answer him here. I also  can’t figure out what his email is, either I haven’t slept enough or the contact form isn’t working right.

Chris wanted to know if I list  domains with BIN prices on all the auction platforms. What I usually do, is list BIN prices on Afternic and SEDO, though I am way behind on adding names to SEDO.  SEDO doesn’t have a fast transfer agreement with Godaddy, and since the  bulk of my names have always been at Godaddy Sedo has kinda taken a backseat as far as my listing priority.  My intention is to change this and bring them up to speed.

I think some people might fear that the name will sell at both places at the same time. I think this is highly unlikely and if it does happen you would simply explain to one of the platforms what happened and cancel the sale. It’s not like they’ll flog you or anything, they’ll understand. If the name is at a registrar like enom, where they have fast transfer for both platforms, the first place the name sells will make the fast transfer status inactive on the other platform. Usually anytime there’s a whois change the fast transfer will be removed.

I don’t always put the same BIN price on different platforms. It’s surprising how many times a name will sell that is listed for a lower price somewhere else. The general buyer has no idea where to look, and if they do find the lower price there’s a chance they’ll think they’re getting a deal, maybe a time sensitive deal and pull the trigger.

So what I generally do is list the name with a BIN price anywhere that the potential buyer is searching for a name, like on a sales platform or in the registration path. On my landing pages I typically don’t have a BIN price. I may be losing some sales, but my reasoning is that  someone who directly navigates to a domain with the possible intention of purchasing said name already had that specific name or concept in mind. The buyer is more likely to negotiate and is less dissuaded my a make offer format.

This happens all the time, I’ll sell a name through a landing page inquiry at uniregisty for more than the name was listed  on the auction platforms. The buyer isn’t browsing names, so while it may be likely that an impulse purchase can still take place there’s a chance to sell the name for more than is listed elsewhere.

Just the other day I sold a 6L brandable name for $2500 through the Uni brokers, and the name was listed at Godaddy and Afternic for $599. When the $1k offer came in, I changed the BIN prices in both places. The broker was able to negotiate the price to the final sales price.

Chris also asked about the BIN names that I list. They aren’t my names, just random listings of name I think might have value at the listed price.

AUCTION RECAP OF MAY 4, 2017

A comprehensive look at the final auction prices, closeouts and more from the auction list posted on May 4, 2017.

If there is an asterisk (*) next to a price, it means that the name was at auction from a private seller (rather than an expiring name) and may have had a reserve.  I’m only showing where the price was when the auction ended, but the name may not have sold if a reserve was in place.

Domain Shane’s Daily List of Domains at Auction for Friday May 5th

There is nothing worse than getting an incredible offer on a name that you already sold.  I buy a lot of lawn care and plant related domains.  Because there are so many lawncare companies in the US, there is high demand for the most popular names. There can be hundreds with exactly the same name. One of my customers came in and I remember I actually owned the dot com of his name.  I stupidly told him I had the name and would give it to him since he was a customer.  I didn’t actually give it to him but I only charged him what I paid at auction.  While I was doing it I had second thoughts. I realized I had made a mistake because there were a lot of companies that shared the name.  And it happened during a little casual conversation.  He didn’t ask, I gave.

My thoughts were right.  He never changed the DNS and I got an offer for $1000 on the domain. I countered with $15,000 thinking that I could easily buy the name back from him and make a little money at that price. They countered with a price very close to $15,000.  I called the guy and told him I could get him $10,000 for the name and was almost positive he would be excited.  Nope.  He said he wouldn’t sell it for under $50,000.  He had big plans to sell the company and he thought the domain name was a big part.  He isn’t wrong and I learned a big lesson.  Don’t give away assets.  Give away your time but not your assets.  Here are today’s names.    Click for Current Price.  And Happy Cinco de Mayo to all my Mexican friends.
