Seven TLDs for the Indie Web

I Want My Name I Want My Name: Let’s take another approach to the indie web. The common talking points are about walled gardens, data ownership, and a dark future, but I don’t know if that’s a strong enough argument for the average person (I’m assuming, since you’re reading this blog, that you’re not an average person). What people need is a reason the indie web is better and easier for publishing ideas and content today.
The real benefit of not using Facebook and Twitter (etc.) for your online thoughts is individuality. On your typical social media platform, the experience is not only standardized, but it’s constantly changing to make your content more advertiser friendly. Aside from the “Who’s the customer? Not you!” argument, this level of uniformity/uncertainty is simply pointing us towards a more boring future. If the best we can hope for is a not-quite-walled-garden like Medium, consider me unenthused.
What we need is for interesting people to start tinkering again. But not just the web developers this time – we need artists, photographers, and writers to be able to make things just right with drag-and-drop tools. And they exist now – better and easier than ever – on platforms like Squarespace, Weebly, Wix, etc.. If you haven’t tried one in a while, go test one out (or share with a friend who is sadly brain dumping on Facebook). You may be surprised at how fun they are. And when you do, we have a handful of “indie web” TLDs on sale that are perfect for the job: .design, .site, .online, .me, .blog, .social, and .website.
If you’re up for a challenge, or feel like challenging that brain-dumping-on-social-media friend, pick up a domain and try putting out content once a week for a month. That’s hardly a time investment at all, and in the end I think you’ll have something there to be excited about. (There was a time when publishing was a rush, not a reaction. Let’s get back to that – this is how you start.)

18 More End User Domain Name Sales

Domain Name Wire Domain Name Wire: A perfume retailer, app developer and vitamin company recently bought domain names. This past week was a fun one for end user domain name sales. The list crosses a number of industries, top level domains and purposes. I’m especially impressed by the $15,500 sale of SnowFlake.co.uk. You don’t see prices like that on .co.uk domain […]
