Let’s all have a nosey at how much ICANN staff get paid

It’s that time of year again when ICANN publishes its US tax returns and we all get to have a good old nosey at how much its top brass get paid. Figures for fiscal 2016 — so, basically a year out of date — came out this week and they show some senior executives got […]

IKE’S LIST OF DOMAINS AT AUCTION FOR Tuesday, May 16th

Domain Shane Domain Shane:
Looks like the new Godaddy appraisal tool has been causing some problems.  I read a post on namepros yesterday about an unusually high number of bids on the Godaddy expired inventory.  The names in question all had a valuation assigned by the new tool at over $1k. I checked into the number of bids myself and found that there were 11K auctions ending on May 23rd with bids, out of  33k total names.
Obviously something went wrong,  my guess is that someone using an API put bids on names with a valuation over a certain price.  I’m pretty sure that the  old “valuation” tool was based on metrics, probably parking stats during the expiration time period where the nameservers are pointed back to Godaddy.  There weren’t  many names with the old valuation attached and most of those names received lots of bids.
The new “valuation” tool, is similar to the old appraisal tool, that was free within Godaddy and also used within premium listings. In Premium it showed a suggested price range for the name. Godaddy moved the new appraisals to the previous location of the old valuations so that they now show up on the listing and in the feed.
So we have 2 completely different tools, one based on traffic and one based on some sort of estibot like algorithm. The problem arose when the subjective appraisals replaced the old traffic valuations in the feed. Previously any name with a decent valuation would get lots of bids, as I’ve already said it was based on Godaddy “traffic” numbers, thus it making sense for an API user to auto add bids, because all the names under that criteria were going to sell.
As of this morning it looks like most of those bids were removed. There was speculation that this was some sort of nefarious Godaddy trickery, adding bids to draw attention, then gather real bids. This obviously is not the case since putting bids on 33% of all the names wouldn’t  make them stand out.  Also something like that is too easy to track long term. We would find evidence that they were doing that, just by looking at the whois, or seeing names that supposedly had bids but later dropped.
In any case, this is another example of Godaddy adding new “features” before fixing the things that need fixed.
What I want them to do, is camel case the domains in Godaddy auctions and premium listings! You want to sell more domains Godaddy? Don’t show made up numbers, make the damn things readable to potential buyers.
Just think how many more names would sell if the potential buyer could see the words parsed out and capitalized, rather than looking at all caps or all lower case. Afternic does this if they’re added  that way, hopefully they’ll start using this simple tech within Godaddy too.
My  no bid name of the day: NameFormula.com  a name for branding company or domainers that think they’ve found the perfect formula and my favorite Shane type name with bids is BackyardGarden.com a blog or eCommerce store for your average everyday gardener.
