Let’s Rethink Blogging

I Want My Name I Want My Name: Blogging is hard. I mean, technically it’s as easy as writing something then hitting the publish button, but getting to that point is a real challenge.
Tweeting, Instagramming, and Facebooking is easy though, right? But why? It’s going to the world just the same, and your name is right there next to it, so what’s the difference?
It’s the stakes. When you post to social media, things get buried and are quickly forgotten. Posting to a blog though feels like something etched in digital stone. It’s yours forever, and it’ll be indexed on Google and read by people until the end of time.
The truth, though, is that blogging is only high stakes because we’ve made it that way. It’s not like bandwidth is expensive anymore – you can basically post anything you want, as often as you want, and not worry about it. My guess is that the high-stakes feeling stems from trying to copy the success of the internet-famous bloggers of yesteryear. The template was simple – pick a niche, be loud, and be prolific. But here’s the deal – you’re not posting on social media to be internet famous (well, unless you are), so why can’t you blog with the same intention?
Just think, with a blog you can do so much more than you can on Facebook or Twitter. You can post all the whims you’re posting now, but if you want, you can go super longform. 800 words, 1,500 words, 2,000 words. Any length you want! And you can format your content whenever you feel like it. You could use big fonts, small fonts, even different fonts every day. You can do anything you want on your own blog because it’s yours, unlike Facebook, which will never be yours unless you’re that lucky Zuckerberg baby (that kid is sooooo set).
So if you’re up for a challenge/adventure, grab a .blog domain (they’re on sale) and get started. Do it for a while and see if it’s for you. I don’t want to prognosticate, but I don’t think you’ll miss Facebook and Twitter a bit. (I deleted my Twitter account a few months ago and it feels so good. I totally recommend it.)
