Comcast cans two top level domains

Internet service provider and entertainment company Comcast (NASDAQ: CMCSA) has voluntarily terminated its two dot-brand top level domain names, .comcast and .xfinity.

The company informed ICANN of its decision in September. ICANN opened a comment period last week after deciding it won’t transition the domains to a new provider (as is usual with dot-brand top level domains).

It doesn’t appear that the company ever used the domains. Google has only indexed the obligatory nic sites for these two domains.

Comcast joins another recent brand to terminate top level domains. Clothing company The Gap (NYSE: GPS) recently terminated its contracts for .oldnavy and .bananarepublic. It so far hasn’t terminated its other dot-brands: .gap and .athleta.

The Gap doesn’t appear to be using any of its top level domains, either.
