Web3 company plans to apply for top level domain name in next round.
The organization behind the Shiba Inu cryptocurrency says it plans to apply for the top level domain .shib in the next round of expansion.
SHIB says it’s partnering with D3 to make the domain name a reality. D3 was created in part to help web3 companies apply for “real” top level domains. You can listen to this podcast to learn more about D3 and its goals.
According to a blog post, there will be some sort of early opportunity for people to get non-ICANN-root names ending in shib that might have some capabilities, such as acting as usernames. People who register these might get the first crack at the ICANN-root-TLD when it becomes a reality.
Unlike some other companies touting web3 names, SHIB’s announcement carefully notes that anything granted before the real .shib comes out isn’t really a domain name. In fact, it’s going so far as using an asterisk instead of a dot, so *shib.
Fans of SHIB will have to wait a while for the real .shib. ICANN doesn’t plan to open the next round of applications until 2026.
